Then together the individual and the therapist work to change the dysfunctional thought to a more positive thought which can get rid of the symptom and change the way that the person responds to negative thoughts.

An automatic thought is usually the result of a connection that the person makes in childhood. A child that doesn’t get a lot of love or attention from their parents but who gets praised for their athletic ability might develop an automatic thought that they are only lovable for their athletic ability and if they lose that ability they won’t be lovable. If someone with that automatic thought has an injury or illness that makes it impossible for them to be athletic they might develop depression and anxiety.

CBT will help that person change that dysfunctional automatic thought and replace it with a positive thought that will not trigger feelings of anxiety, worthlessness, or fear. The person can do this type of replacing dysfunctional thoughts with affirming thoughts to combat persistent problems and to help eliminate the symptoms of depression and anxiety. 

During CBT sessions patients and therapists may use many different techniques like role-playing, journaling, art therapy, talk therapy, and more to get the desired result. This type of approach gives the individual the chance to find a treatment protocol that works for them instead of trying to force them to work with one prescribed type of treatment.
